Common sense morality suggests that we have special obligations, owing to the relationship we stand in with other people, such as our family, friends, neighbors, compatriots. What is the ground of special obligation? How to distinguish from general from special obligation? How to deal with the conflict between and general and special obligation? These are important questions concerning special obligation. In this course, we will explore how Consequentialism, Voluntarism and Anti-voluntarism answer these questions before we assess the strength and weakness of each solution.

The aim of this course is to help students critically examine alternative views of special obligation, and eventually achieve a better understanding of the strength and weakness of each view.
